One of the largest literary festivals in India, Mathrubhumi is gearing up for the fourth edition on Feb 2-5, 2023 in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala.
The fourth edition of MBIFL under the theme “Shadows of history, Lights of the future” makes a comeback at a fitting time as Mathrubhumi celebrates its centenary year. At this time, this festival becomes a contemplative platform to examine a journey emerging from the shadows and reaching the light. The shadows being the experiences, the learnings and the realities of the past while the light being the illuminative wisdom and imagination guiding humankind with new ideas and perspectives to the future through literature, art and culture, politics, technology, science, gender and more. This edition of the festival will host close to 500 speakers and performers from across India and overseas.
Started in the year 2018, Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters is a celebration of letters and ideas. After 3 successful editions in 2018, 19 & 20, the festival was put on hold as the world came to a standstill in the grips of a devastating pandemic.
MBIFL is organised by Mathrubhumi, which is one of the largest media groups in India. This edition is special to us mainly for two reasons: One, Mathrubhumi is celebrating its 100 years, a special milestone for a media group which has played a considerable role in the socio-cultural and linguistic evolution of the place and its people. Two, we all are coming together after the lockdown years.Today, Mathrubhumi has undoubtedly become a byword for excellence with a leading Malayalam daily (16 editions), a popular FM channel with 7 stations, over 7 best-selling publications, 2 top-rated television channels and an online news portal.
MBIFL has brought together and hosted over 1,200 speakers in the last three editions, and it is a matter of pride that MBIFL is one of the largest and best loved festivals in Southeast Asia.
Mathrubhumi has always believed that literature has a major impact on the development of a society. This was the inspiration behind MBIFL, a first-of-its-kind literary fest in South India.
From a confluence of minds from ‘known lands and unheard voices’ through ‘shrinking spaces and transcending letters’, this year, we take a holistic look around us—literature, science, nature, society, business, health, social change, innovation and ideas—and explore how Rewind will help us in our Forward journey towards the ‘lights of future’, learning from the ‘shadows of history’.
This year’s speakers include Nobel-laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah, Booker-winner Shehan Karunatilaka, Booker Shortlists, Colum McCann and Nadifa Muhammed, Icelandic novelist and lyricist Sjon, and all the leading Indian writers.
This record milestone comes just three years after crossing 10 million subscribers in 2019
Dec’22: Earlier this year, Aaj Tak became the first news channel globally to cross 50 million subscribers. Ms. Kalli Purie, Vice Chairperson, India Today Group, met Mr. Gautam Anand, Managing Director of APAC - YouTube, in Singapore to commemorate the special achievement.
“Thank you so much, YouTube! This is just amazing. The team is already planning its way to 100 million so YouTube had better start designing the next button,” Ms Purie quipped to Mr Anand. “Trust has always been the foundation for audience engagement at AajTak. It’s no different with our YouTube channel, but on a much wider scale with hundreds of videos getting uploaded every day. We place equal emphasis on having new audiences discover our channel while ensuring loyal viewers revisit, and invest in figuring out what works on YouTube – whether this is a nuanced understanding of thumbnails or producing hero content frequently.”
Aaj Tak started its digital journey by launching its YouTube channel in the year 2009, and started streaming news live on YouTube for the first time in 2017. The massive popularity gained by the channel subsequently led to its Diamond play button from YouTube in 2019 for crossing 10 million subscribers. Now, just three years later, Aaj Tak is the first news channel to reach 50 million subscribers on YouTube.

“Constant experimentation with new formats like Shorts and investment into our Community page has really paid off, and consistently breaking stories has helped create a very loyal fanbase,” explained Ms. Purie. “Events like the Presidential Elections of 2022, Solar Eclipse and the Cricket World Cup just kept encouraging us to do better and better.”
YouTube has been at the forefront of India's mobile revolution, by powering the content and creator ecosystem and by propelling the massive upsurge of video streaming in the world's largest democracy. AajTak has also fast evolved its offering to meet new consumer needs, with the introduction of Shorts, and other constantly emerging insights on LIVE Streams. The channel now has a universe of committed audiences across TV, web, app and social platforms through compelling storytelling that’s tailored to individual platforms.
This milestone is testimony to Aaj Tak’s sharpened channel strategy that has contributed to increased subscriptions and enabled engagement with wider audiences.

Last year’s Ascenders winners, selected from the highest number of entrants in the competition’s history, included 25 talented young creatives from 13 countries and regions. Prominent past Ascenders winners include Au Chon Hin (Macao, 2022), Kevin Cantrell (Mantua, USA, 2018), Roxane Gataud (Brussels, 2022), Gemma O’Brien (Sydney, 2022), Juan Carlos Pagan (New York, 2018), Tré Seals (Maryland, 2018), and others.
“Ascenders is the space to confront yourself and overcome the biggest obstacle: the limited perception that we have of ourselves when we are starting out,” said Fer Cozzi, graphic designer and type designer based in Buenos Aires who was an Ascenders winner in 2019 and judge last year.
“This competition isn’t about having the perfect portfolio, but more about looking toward the future,” she added. “Ascenders entries should contain conviction, not just show off technical skill. I can’t wait to see what this year’s winners will show, since it will certainly reveal where the discipline is headed.”
This year’s Ascenders branding and award are designed by Anıl Aykan, graphic designer at Barnbrook Design in London and member of the TDC Advisory Board. The design depicts the “ascending” creatives by embracing the idea of growth and invasion, with the journey demonstrated by visual metaphors of steps toward further growth and expansion.
